Lord of Light

R'hllor, Lord of Light

Lord of Light Symbol

R'hllor, more commonly known as the Lord of Light, is a deity worshiped mainly in the continent of Essos. This god has also been described on the show as a "fire god". Its clergy the "fire priests" centers worship around fire and light. There are two main deities in this religion: a god that represents light, love and joy, then there is a god representing darkness, evil and fear (aka the Great Other) who are at war. Fanatic followers of this religion believe that only R'hllor is the one true god between the two, while The old Gods of the Forest, the Faith of the Seven, and all other gods from other religions are demons and false idols that must be cast down and burned. The religion is very focused on prophecy, and on ecstatic visions that are received through communion with the flames. There are a number of holy texts in this religion, similar to the Faith of the Seven, but there is no main text. Followers also believe in a heaven and hell, however they believe that the current world in which they all live in is that hell, but that the Lord of Light is the one that will save the faithful adherents from the darkness. As mentioned, most of the worship practiced involve fires which could be as small as a bonfire to advocating the sacrifice of nonbelievers by immolation in extreme cases. The religion is led by the "Red Priest" but both men and women can be in the priesthood. In temples of the Lord of Light, Red Priests conduct bonfires and sing prayers each night, beseeching the Lord of Light to bring back the dawn.

This religion has comparable aspects to both Zoroastrianism (fire worship) and Manichaeism (duality). In Zoroastrianism, it uses Atar (fire) as a primary symbol and erecting fire temples. Fire is considered to be life-sustaining, while prayer is usually done in the presence or worship is done in the presence of any sort of source of fire. Like the fiction-based Lord of Light, Zoroastrianism also has beliefs about resurrection of the dead and a final savior of the world who one day will return the wicked to hell (Azor Ahai). In Manichaeism, there is a strong emphasis on the dualistic view on the goodness of light and evil of darkness. Our world is seen a battleground between God and Satan which is similar to the scenario between the Lord of Light (R'hllor) and the Lord of Darkness.
